As a mid-sized sport utility vehicle with plenty of room and all the comfort you’d expect, the 2011 Jeep Liberty Renegade doesn’t sacrifice any off-road capabilities. The Renegade model is a little nicer than the Jeep Liberty Sport, but not as well equipped as the Limited. Yet, it has plenty of comfort features that make it great for a road trip and is very capable off-road to handle most obstacles with ease.

But some of the best features of the Liberty Renegade begin with its bold and rugged appearance. Our test model was shod in the new Blackberry Pearl paint with a dark Slate Gray leather interior. Not a color you’d expect on a Jeep, but it looks just as good parked in front of a swanky restaurant as it does in front of a trailhead. The bold Jeep grille and Trail Ready badge on the fenders indicate that this Jeep is ready for the dirt with its Selec-Trac II, full-time on demand transfer case that allows you to manually switch into four-wheel low when you need it. Additional traction comes from Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Assist and Electronic Roll Mitigation which allows even the most novice of off-road enthusiasts complete control and confidence.

The Liberty is available in three trim levels, Sport, Renegade, and Limited. Both two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive systems are offered on the Sport and Limited trims, while the Renegade is equipped with four-wheel drive only. The standard powertrain in all Liberty models is a 210 hp 3.7-liter V6 and a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes SIRIUS satellite radio, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, all-speed traction control, and electronic roll mitigation. The SkySlider option is a full-length open canvas sunroof that can slide accordion-style forward, backward or partially opened to any position in-between.         For 2011, the Lexus IS F receives a more responsive power steering system, revised suspension tuning and a Torsen limited-slip differential for added traction. On the cosmetic side, LED daytime running lights debut, along with new gauges, interior trim and an optional interior treatment in a wild orange-and-black scheme.

To others, it shows what might happen if your teenage son absconded with your Lexus IS and your platinum credit card. Either way, only the exotic Lexus LFA sports car sends a stronger high-performance message for Toyota's premium brand than the 2011 Lexus IS F.

Now in its fourth year of production, the IS F receives an array of high-performance hardware, including a potent 416-horsepower V8, bigger brakes, a suspension that's calibrated for aggressive driving and sticky performance tires on 19-inch wheels. Styling comes next, with a meaner front fascia, a bulging hood, wide fender flares, low-slung rocker-sill skirts, quad exhaust pipes and a rear spoiler. Needless to say, the IS F doesn't look like any other Lexus model.

The rear-wheel-drive 2011 Lexus IS F is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 416 horsepower and 371 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic with a manual mode and shift paddles on the steering wheel is the only transmission offered.

In Edmunds testing of the Lexus IS F, the car accelerates to 60 mph from a standstill in a brisk 4.8 seconds. EPA fuel economy estimates are 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 18 mpg in combined driving.

        The 2011 Dodge Journey continues in five trims; Express FWD and Mainstreet, R/T, Crew and Lux in either FWD or AWD. Updates for this year include a redesigned and retuned suspension, a new V-6 engine and an updated interior. The new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine delivers a 20 percent boost in power compared with the V-6 engine it replaces - generating 283 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. The all-new Uconnect Touch media center is capable of everything from vehicle navigation to dual-zone climate controls to the ability to check fuel prices. Optional on Journey is the 5+2 passenger seating system which features the Tilt 'n Slide second row seat.

        Standard safety features include six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, brake assist, traction control, and stability control. The Journey has many available convenience features including a fold-flat front passenger seat for transporting long items, Flip'n'Stow and In-Floor storage areas under the front passenger and rear seats, and Tilt'n'Slide to enable easy access to the third-row seat.

     The 2012 Lincoln MKS is available in three trims: FWD, AWD and EcoBoost AWD. The FWD and AWD models are equipped with a 270 horsepower 3.7L V6 engine while the EcoBoost AWD receives a direct injection twin-turbo charged 3.5L V6 engine producing 355 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. It makes the same power as a 4.6L V8 but still maintains a V6 engines fuel economy of 16/25 city/highway. Both engines are mated to a SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission. Standard features on all models include MYKey programmable vehicle key, power rear window shades, Forward Sensing System, rain-sensing wipers, traction control, and tire pressure monitoring system. The EcoBoost AWD model also receives 19-inch wheels, steering wheel paddle shifter with the six-speed SelectShift automatic, adaptive HID headlights, and Intelligent Access with push button start. 

     The standard engine is a 3.7-liter V6 of 273 horsepower and EPA fuel economy figures of 17/24 mpg with front-wheel drive and 16/23 mpg with all-wheel drive. Each engine is matched with a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The 3.7-liter engine is available with front drive or all-wheel drive, and the EcoBoost engine is available only with the all-wheel drive.

     The Lincoln MKS cuts a handsome profile. Its muscular, long body is trimmed with chrome highlights, giving it the flash of a thoroughbred American. Inside is a roomy cabin, most notably in the rear compartment. The cabin design and quality materials, typified by elegant leather upholstery, confirm that this is an automobile for those accustomed to fine surroundings. The MKS offers the latest in technology. 

        You can't tell by looking at it, but the Jeep Wrangler has undergone a transformation. The iconic shape remains -- seven-slot grille, round headlights, short wheelbase, soft or hard top -- but Jeep has made huge improvements to the off-roader for 2012. Jeep invited us to drive the 2012 Wrangler on the Rubicon, one of the hardest 4x4 trails around, used almost exclusively by modified vehicles. We also got to drive on the two-lane asphalt roads that wind around Lake Tahoe.

        Consider this the second part of a major overhaul to the Wrangler and four-door Wrangler Unlimited. Part one happened for the 2011 model year, when the JK (the current generation's code name) received a new interior, plus, on the Sahara, a body-color hard top and fender flares. The hard top is of the same composite material as it was before, but what sounds like a minor change actually has a major effect on the Wrangler's appearance. In addition, the rear windows are larger as of 2011, improving visibility. For 2012, the body-color hard top and fender flares are optional on the Rubicon, too.

        The 2012 Rubicon’s approach and departure angles have been slightly improved; the 2012 Wrangler is available with 3.21, 3.73, or 4.10 final drive axle ratios, depending on model.         If nothing else, the 2012 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder wins the contest for the Porsche with the longest and perhaps clumsiest name ever. But after a day of driving it on good roads all around Stuttgart's farm country and blasting along the no-limit Autobahn, however, we break down like always and decide it's pretty damned cool to possess any 911 Turbo S whatsoever.

      We’re at the world introduction of the seventh-generation Porsche 911, whose iconic silhouette, rear-mounted flat-6 engine and round headlights are touchstones to more than 700,000 enthusiasts who’ve put a 911 in their garage since the first one rolled off the Zuffenhausen production line in September of 1964. And as we roll through Santa Barbara’s sleepy tree-lined streets, we have the undivided attention of a BMW 328i driver directly ahead, recording this moment for posterity with his iPhone—arm thrust straight up, Statue of Liberty style, through an open sunroof.

        The new 911 is larger, but incrementally so. Overall length grows by 2.2 in. and wheelbase grow by 3.9 in. (now 96.5). Yet overhangs are trimmed, and most important, the rear axle moves aft roughly 3 in. relative to the engine (made possible by new 3-shaft transmissions whose output flanges are moved closer to the engine), resulting in a significant tweaking of the proportions, and a slightly less rear-heavy weight distribution. Add a wider front track—a full 2.0 in. wider for the Carrera S models we drove—and you end up with a significant challenge for the design team headed by Michael Mauer. Traditionally, the 911 has had a narrow front, wide rear look, so with the new car’s extra girth up front, some deft manipulation of rear flare radii took place to retain the iconic Coke-bottle contours. Do you miss the more exaggerated (and less aero-friendly) fender forms of earlier 911s? “Just wait for the 911 Turbo,” says Mauer. “You will not be disappointed.”
