Upon introduction, the i SV 4-Door is equipped with a standard 2.0-liter, I4, 148-horsepower engine that achieves 25-mpg in the city and 33-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard. The s Touring 5-Door [Discontinued] is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, I4, 167-horsepower engine that achieves 20-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional.

The Mazda3 is offered in four trim levels: SV (sedan only), Sport (sedan only), Touring, and Grand Touring. Powertrain choices vary from a 148-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and a five-speed manual or automatic transmission, to a 167-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Lastly, a new SKYACTIVE 155-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, is offered. The new SKYACTIV technology focuses on improving fuel-efficiency. Standard or available safety features include six airbags, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, active front head restraints, bi-xenon adaptive headlights and tire pressure monitoring. Available tech features include a compact navigation system, advanced keyless entry and start, Bluetooth for cell phones and music streaming, Homelink garage door opener, satellite radio and a 10-speaker BOSE audio system.
